Why do online sellers need capital before they make the sale?

Online sellers need capital up front because the business runs inventory first and revenue second. A brand selling on a marketplace or its own storefront orders product from a manufacturer, pays a deposit, pays the balance before shipping, pays freight and duties, pays to store the goods at a fulfillment center, then spends on ads to drive traffic. Only after all of that does the first customer order arrive, and the money from that order still takes time to reach the bank.

The channel keeps growing. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated seasonally adjusted retail ecommerce sales of $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 12.2 percent from a year earlier and equal to 17.1 percent of total retail sales. More sellers and more volume mean more reorders, and every reorder is another cash outlay before the revenue lands.

Successful sellers feel this squeeze most. When a product takes off, the next inventory order is bigger than the last, and the gap between paying the supplier and collecting from customers grows with it. A merchant cash advance lets the seller buy the stock now against sales that are already coming in.

How do marketplace and processor payouts affect an advance?

Payout timing is the defining quirk of ecommerce underwriting. Online sellers rarely get paid at the moment of sale. Marketplaces and payment processors collect the customer's money, hold it for a period, deduct fees and then pay out on their own schedule.

Amazon is the clearest example. Under its delivery-date-based reserve, often called DD+7, proceeds generally become available seven days after the order is delivered rather than when it ships. Seller-industry coverage reports that North American sellers moved onto this policy on March 12, 2026. For a seller with steady volume, that adds a rolling delay of a week or more to every dollar of revenue.

  • Deposits come from platforms. The bank statement shows payouts from a marketplace or processor, not daily card batches from a terminal.
  • Remittance is usually fixed. Funders often collect by daily or weekly ACH debit sized to the seller's average payouts.
  • Reserves can change. A platform can lengthen a hold or pause payouts, which affects the seller's ability to remit.
  • Fees are netted out. Payouts arrive after platform, fulfillment and advertising fees, so deposits understate gross sales.

What makes ecommerce underwriting different?

Ecommerce underwriting relies on platform data as much as bank statements. Sellers can usually export detailed sales, refund and payout reports, which give a funder a clearer view of order volume than many brick-and-mortar businesses can offer.

Seller typeMain revenue sourceCommon use of fundsWhat to watch
Marketplace sellersMarketplace payouts after reserveInventory reorders, fulfillment feesAccount health, suspension risk, single-platform dependence
Direct-to-consumer brandsProcessor payouts from their own storefrontAd spend, inventory, product launchesCustomer acquisition cost swings, return rates
Multichannel retailersSeveral platforms plus wholesale accountsInventory across channels, warehousingReconciling deposits from many sources
DropshippersProcessor payouts, no inventory heldAd spendThin margins, supplier reliability; some funders avoid
Subscription businessesRecurring card chargesInventory, customer acquisitionChurn and chargeback rates

Concentration is the risk underwriters raise most often. A seller who makes nearly all revenue on one marketplace depends on that account staying in good standing. Returns are another factor, especially after the holidays, and inventory may sit in a third-party warehouse or in transit from overseas rather than on the seller's own premises.

Ad spend deserves a question of its own. Many direct-to-consumer brands spend a large share of revenue on paid social and search, and a sudden rise in advertising costs can squeeze margins even while sales grow. Ask how the seller tracks return on ad spend and what happens to sales if they cut the budget for a month. A seller who knows those numbers cold is usually a seller who will manage an advance well.

Which filters should you set for ecommerce MCA leads?

Revenue and time in business are the core filters, because they tell you whether the store has a track record across at least one full selling season.

  1. Monthly revenue: online revenue can scale fast. Set the floor your funders use and remember that payouts are net of fees.
  2. Time in business: a store that has been through a fourth quarter gives underwriters seasonal data. Many funders want a year or more.
  3. Advance amount: inventory orders can be large relative to monthly revenue, so allow a realistic range.
  4. Credit score range: set the range your partners accept; many weigh sales data heavily.
  5. State: online sellers sell everywhere, but the business is registered somewhere. Filter on the business's state.

If you also fund physical stores, compare this page with retail MCA leads; many sellers run both channels. Sellers who buy in bulk from manufacturers and resell to other businesses fit better under wholesale MCA leads.

How should you approach an ecommerce seller?

Approach online sellers the way they run their business: quickly, in writing first, and with numbers. Many are comfortable with email and text, work odd hours and may be in a different time zone from your team.

  • Speak in inventory terms. "How many units is the next order, and when does it need to be paid?" frames the advance around a real purchase.
  • Acknowledge the payout delay. Sellers know their cash is stuck in a reserve. Showing you understand it builds credibility.
  • Ask for platform reports early. Sales and payout reports, plus bank statements, speed up underwriting.
  • Be exact about the product. Legally, the funder purchases a share of future sales; the seller is not borrowing. Show the total payback and the remittance schedule against their payout calendar.
  • Time your campaigns. Requests often build in late summer as sellers stock up for the holidays, and again after big sales events deplete inventory.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

Do ecommerce leads include marketplace sellers and DTC brands?

Both, plus multichannel retailers, subscription businesses and some dropshipping stores. These models carry very different risks: a single-marketplace seller depends on one account, while a dropshipper holds no inventory and runs on thin margins. Choose the models you want, and drop the ones your funders avoid, before the campaign goes live.

Why do ecommerce businesses use merchant cash advances?

Mostly to buy inventory and fund advertising before revenue arrives. Online sellers pay manufacturers, freight and fulfillment costs up front, then wait for marketplace or processor payouts that may be held for days after a sale. An advance bridges that gap, especially when a product is growing and reorders get larger.

How does Amazon's payout reserve affect underwriting?

Under Amazon's delivery-date-based reserve, often called DD+7, proceeds generally become available seven days after an order is delivered. That means a seller's bank deposits lag their sales. Underwriters look at both platform sales reports and actual payouts to understand the timing before setting the remittance.

What remittance method suits an online seller?

A fixed daily or weekly debit sized to average payouts is the usual answer. Revenue lands as marketplace or processor payouts rather than terminal batches, so a classic card holdback does not apply. Matching the debit frequency to the seller's payout calendar keeps the remittance from landing on days when the account is empty.

What documents do online sellers need to provide?

Funders usually start with recent business bank statements and an ID, then ask for platform sales and payout reports exported from the seller's marketplace or storefront dashboard. Some also request supplier invoices tied to the use of funds. Digital sellers can often produce these within minutes.

Is ecommerce a seasonal industry for MCA demand?

Yes. Many sellers place their largest inventory orders in late summer and early fall to prepare for the holidays, which drives a spike in funding requests. Big marketplace sales events and product launches create smaller peaks during the year, and returns after the holidays can tighten cash in January.

Can I start with a small ecommerce test order?

Yes. You can run a small test order filtered to ecommerce, with revenue, time-in-business, credit, amount and state filters applied. Measure contact rate, document rate and funded deals, then scale. Results depend on your funders and sales process, so no outcome can be promised in advance.
