How many small businesses does Michigan have?
Michigan has 983,079 small businesses, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 Small Business Profile, and they employ 1.9 million people. That is 47.7 percent of the state's private-sector workforce, based on 2022 Census data. Small firms make up 99.6 percent of all Michigan businesses.
The market is large and still adding businesses. Between March 2023 and March 2024, 25,756 Michigan establishments opened and 24,412 closed, a net gain of 1,344. Small businesses accounted for 24,975 of the openings.
Where the small business jobs are:
- Health care and social assistance: 270,839
- Manufacturing: 256,182
- Accommodation and food services: 241,634, which is 64.7 percent of the sector
- Retail trade: 189,852
- Professional and technical services: 153,283
- Construction: 147,092, with small firms holding 85.4 percent of construction jobs
By number of firms, the biggest groups of small employers are main street service businesses (21,252), retailers (21,008) and contractors (20,634). Those three groups alone give an MCA buyer more than 60,000 small employers to work with, before counting manufacturers, restaurants or medical practices.
Bank credit covers only part of that demand. Reporting banks issued $1.9 billion in 2023 loans to Michigan businesses with revenue of $1 million or less.
Why do Michigan auto suppliers turn to merchant cash advances?
Michigan's small manufacturers ask for MCAs because they finance their customers. The auto industry runs on a tiered supply chain. Automakers buy from tier-one suppliers, which buy from tier-two shops, which buy from tier-three machine shops, stampers, platers, tool and die makers and heat treaters. Payment terms stretch at every level, so a small shop in Warren, Sterling Heights, Livonia or Grand Rapids may wait 60 days or more to be paid for parts it has already built.
That works until something changes. A new program launch requires tooling and extra shifts before the first invoice. A model changeover cuts volume for weeks. A strike or supply shortage idles a customer's plant and the supplier's deposits drop to almost nothing. Each of those moments sends owners looking for capital that arrives in days, not the weeks a bank needs.
A merchant cash advance fits because it is a purchase of future receivables, not a loan, and remittances can be set as a percentage of revenue that eases when deposits fall. For underwriters, the key questions are customer concentration (does one buyer account for most revenue?), the strength of the program the shop supplies, and whether recent deposits reflect a temporary disruption or a lost contract. Our manufacturing MCA leads page goes deeper on screening suppliers.
Michigan's small manufacturers also sell abroad. Small firms made up 88.5 percent of the 13,885 identified Michigan exporters in 2023 and shipped $12.9 billion in goods. Export orders bring their own payment delays.
Beyond the factory floor, the same auto cycle ripples through everything around it. When plants run overtime, the diners, bars, auto repair shops and retailers near them do well. When a plant idles, those businesses feel it within a pay period or two. That is why metro Detroit restaurant and service leads tend to rise and fall with industry news, and why a Dearborn or Wayne County food service merchant's deposits deserve the same scrutiny as a supplier's. West Michigan adds its own manufacturing base, with office furniture, food processing and medical device suppliers around Grand Rapids, Holland and Zeeland, plus a dense network of contractors, landscapers and home service companies that follow the region's building activity and slow down every winter.
What does Up North seasonality mean for Michigan funders?
Northern Michigan's tourism season creates a second, very different MCA market. Traverse City, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Mackinaw City, the Lake Michigan shoreline towns and the Upper Peninsula fill with visitors from June through early fall, then quiet down. Restaurants, resorts, marinas, outfitters, gift shops and fudge shops earn most of their revenue in a few months.
Those owners need capital at predictable times:
- March to May: reopening costs, seasonal hires, inventory and repairs before Memorial Day.
- Late summer: expansion or equipment while deposits are strong.
- Winter: ski areas, snowmobile trail towns and ice-fishing outfitters have their own season, while summer businesses wait out the cold.
Weather shapes the rest of the state too. Construction, landscaping and paving slow sharply from December through March, and contractors often seek working capital in late winter to stock materials and bring crews back. Roofers and restoration contractors see surges after spring storms.
The SBA counts 219,545 rural Michigan businesses. Many sit in these seasonal regions, where fewer funders call and older leads can still connect. When you underwrite a seasonal merchant, compare deposits year over year rather than month to month.
Is a merchant cash advance regulated in Michigan?
Michigan has no state-specific commercial financing disclosure or registration law for merchant cash advances that we are aware of as of 2026. It does not appear among the states, such as New York, California, Utah, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Connecticut, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana and Texas, that have adopted disclosure or broker rules for small business financing.
What does apply:
- Federal calling rules. The TCPA and federal Do Not Call rules govern calls and texts, including the 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. window in the called party's local time and consent requirements for autodialed or prerecorded outreach.
- Contract substance. An MCA should work as a true sale of receivables, with a reconciliation process the merchant can actually use. Courts in many states examine whether an agreement that calls itself a purchase really behaves like a loan.
- Multi-state merchants. A Michigan supplier with a plant in Ohio or Indiana, or a seller incorporated elsewhere, can raise questions about which state's law governs.
This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm current Michigan requirements with counsel before you fund or broker deals in the state.
How should you filter and call Michigan MCA leads?
Build campaigns by region and industry, then set calling windows by time zone.
- Metro Detroit (Wayne, Oakland, Macomb): real-time exclusive leads filtered to manufacturing, construction, restaurants, health care and auto repair. Competition is heavy, so call within minutes.
- West Michigan (Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo): real-time leads for manufacturers, furniture and office products suppliers, contractors and food service.
- Lansing, Ann Arbor, Flint and Saginaw: a blend of real-time and aged leads.
- Northern Lower Peninsula and the U.P.: aged leads most of the year, with heavier real-time buying in spring for seasonal businesses. Live transfers help when you want a closer to explain sales-based remittance on the first call.
Mind the time zone line. Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties, along the Wisconsin border in the Upper Peninsula, use Central time; the rest of Michigan uses Eastern. Route leads by ZIP code so a merchant in Iron Mountain is not called an hour early. Set your revenue floor and time-in-business minimum to match your paper, and start with a small test order before scaling.

“Yeah, I'm really impressed with the aged.”
“My team is very happy with your leads. So that's why I want to personally call and inform you that. We'll do the same mix, 50-50, but we'll just double the volume. I'm happy. My team is happy. They don't complain about leads.”
Questions buyers ask
Which Michigan counties are on Central time?
Four Upper Peninsula counties bordering Wisconsin use Central time: Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee. The rest of Michigan, including the rest of the U.P., uses Eastern time. Route leads by ZIP code so telephone solicitations stay within the federal 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. window in each merchant's local time.
Are auto suppliers good MCA prospects?
Many are, with careful underwriting. Small Michigan suppliers can wait two months or longer to be paid and face sudden swings from launches, changeovers and plant shutdowns. Check customer concentration, the program they supply and whether recent deposit drops are temporary before sizing an advance.
Does Michigan regulate merchant cash advances?
As of 2026, Michigan has no state-specific MCA disclosure or registration statute that we are aware of. Federal TCPA and Do Not Call rules still apply, and contracts should be structured as true purchases of receivables. Confirm current requirements with counsel, since several states have added laws in recent years.
When do northern Michigan businesses need funding?
Spring is the peak. Restaurants, resorts, marinas and shops in Traverse City, Petoskey, Mackinaw City and the U.P. pay for reopening, staff and inventory before summer revenue arrives. Some seek capital in late summer to expand. Winter-season businesses like ski areas have their own cycle.
How many small businesses are in Michigan?
The SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 Small Business Profile counts 983,079 small businesses in Michigan, 99.6 percent of all firms. They employ about 1.9 million people, or 47.7 percent of private-sector employees, based on 2022 Census data. Michigan gained a net 1,344 establishments between March 2023 and March 2024.
Can I buy only metro Detroit MCA leads?
Yes. Geography filters let you limit a campaign to Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, or any other counties you choose. Many buyers run metro Detroit on real-time leads and the rest of the state on aged leads, then compare cost per funded deal before moving budget.
What industries should a Michigan MCA campaign include?
Manufacturing and auto suppliers, construction, restaurants, health care practices, retail and auto repair are the core. The SBA's 2025 profile shows manufacturing as Michigan's second largest small business employer and small firms holding 85.4 percent of construction jobs. Pick the industries your funders approve.
